Why & When You Might Consider a Tilt Bed Trailer

Flatbed trailers are the standard for hauling equipment and bulk cargo. They provide the highest load capacity and offer the most simple and easy to maintain construction. However, in the last 15 years or so, the rise in the use of mini-excavators, skid steers and the number of contractors looking for faster and safe operation, led to the rise of tilt bed trailers in the heavy-duty market.

So, why and when might a tilt bed trailer be right for you?

  1. Efficiency of time & labor in loading/unloading – when you need to get your equipment on and off multiple times per day – no fussing with heavy ramps.
  2. Safety, simplicity & reduced risk – one man operation and little training or excess care needed to operate (some tilt beds even have remote control).
  3. Low clearance equipment or vehicles – Built lower to the ground for a lower load incline rate, tilt beds are ideal for mini-excavators, compact loaders/rollers, pavers, etc. Also, sports cars and motorcycles. Much less chance of bottoming out or damage during loading/unloading.
  4. Equipment trailers can be used for multiple pieces of equipment on the same load, while tilts are designed for one piece of equipment with its implements.
  5. Both have their advantages depending on the application - Tilts work great with track machines and trailers with ramps work great with multiple pieces of equipment.

Tilt bed trailer designs have evolved and are increasingly popular, with both hydraulic and mechanical tilt mechanisms available.

Flatbed trailers still have an advantage when you need the widest load and weight capacities, haul a variety of equipment types or don’t necessarily need to load/unload multiple times per day. Flatbed trailers with ramps are also the most economical price option.

The point is there are more ways to meet your equipment hauling needs. So come on down to The Trailer Depot and let our specialist show you both Tilt Bed and Flatbed Trailers with Ramps – and all their options - so you can decide what works best for you! We’ll Hook You Up!
